Well I had to write a post on the Academy Awards, I had no choice. What kind of entertainment nut would I be without an Oscar post? So without further adieu, I present
Let me start off my saying that I hate the Oscars. Don't get me wrong, I will watch them, obsess over them, discuss them ad nauseum, but I still hate them. This goes back to yesterday's post. How can you say that one movie is best? I remember one year when Saving Private Ryan was up against Shakespeare in Love...are you kidding me? Is that a fair race? One is a massive war epic and the other is an arty period piece. Each spectacular in their own right, but how can they be in the same category for comparison? I don't get it. The Golden Globes are much better with their separate categories for drama and comedy. The Academy should take notice and make some adjustments. It's not like they're not willing to change, they did it with the animated film section, right? So I call on you, Academy! Get with it!
Having said that, on with the nominees. My protests shall now go without saying...
BEST ACTOR
Okay the hotly debated Best Actor category. Let's just automatically cross Ben Kingsley and Jude Law off of our scorecards, shall we? They ain't gettin' nothin'. Bum luck for Jude, I have to say, that Cold Mountain came out last year instead of this year. He could have been in the running in the 2005 awards. His performance was phenomenal. I would give him the award in a heartbeat, honestly. But let's look at it this way: Jude is guaranteed another shot at Oscar. He's young and extremely talented, so we'll see him again. Ben Kingsley isn't young, but he basically only makes Oscar-type movies, so he'll always be around. For the rest of my best actor prediction, read yesterday's post.
BEST ACTRESS
Ahhh the best actress award...it will of course go to Charlize Theron because she put latex on her face, gained 30 pounds, and wore brown contacts. That's all you need to do in Hollywood nowadays. Make yourself fat and/or ugly, and you're gold...Having said that, I do think Charlize deserves the win, I've heard her performance was horrifyingly real. Plus I don't think any of the other actresses were that great. Meh. I wish Nicole Kidman had been nominated for Cold Mountain, but I seem to be in the minority on that.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Any of you who have seen Mystic River are probably behind a Tim Robbins win. I agree. Watching him was gut-wrenching. He is the definite favorite to win, and he probably will. I have heard from my sister, however, that Ken Watanabe from The Last Samurai is very deserving of the Oscar as well. She says that he makes the film. I salute anyone who can come out of a Tom Cruise movie with a redeeming performance. Ugh.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Renee Zellweger. There's just no discussion to be had. Theeeeee end.
BEST DIRECTOR
Here's another case of bum luck for one of our nominees, and a total load of crap for another: Clint Eastwood and Anthony Minghella. They both released a movie this year alongside Peter Jackson, who is ridiculously overdue for an Oscar. Now, if Jackson had won for either of the first two Lord of the Rings films, Eastwood and Minghella might have had a chance. But let's face it: Jackson is a guaranteed winner. I can't begrudge him his win, it's well deserved, but I am sad for Eastwood and Minghella, because they are definitely Oscar-calibar directors this year. Why the HELL wasn't Minghella nominated? TOTAL BULLSHIT. And who the hell is this City of God guy? Huh? I'm royally pissed.
BEST PICTURE
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. I mean, did you really expect me to say anything else?
I don't have the energy to go into all of the other categories right now, maybe later in the week, I don't know....for now I'm just mad that Cold Mountain was screwed in the nominations, and I really hope that Tim Robbins doesn't veer off into some communist ramble during his acceptance speech...
