Alex Ross writes about Richard Strauss who happens to be one of my favorite composers. In fact my best audition and jury piece is one of Strauss' arias. There has always been something in his music that just pulls at me from inside.
Although I am a fan of Strauss he is not the reason for this post. I just wanted to share something that Ross said when he was defending his naming of Strauss as "the composer of the century":
Actually, there is no "greatest composer of the century"; it's a condescending formulation that diminishes a fantastically rich period to a quaint village that one man could be the mayor of. Who would try to pick out the greatest composer of the eighteenth century, or the nineteenth?Isn't that the truth?? I share Ross' sentiment wholeheartedly. I would even extend it to other areas, not just the arts. Just a thought...
I think I'm the greatest blog commentator of the century -- nay, of all time. Ever. Period. End of sentence.
