For the past week I have had a large pile of Dell boxes and the detritus that comes with new computer equipment sitting next to my very small trashcan. Each night that I've been here I have left a sign taped to the pile that says "TRASH - BASURA" so that the cleaning crew would take the pile away. Each morning I come in to find that they have taken the sign...and nothing else. They take the sign that says "trash" and they leave the pile of trash that HAD THE SIGN TAPED ON IT.
I think I'm developing a tic.
UPDATE: I have now added TWO signs and I have taped them to the wall above the pile of trash. One has a large orange arrow pointing down and the second sign reads "TODO EN ESTE MONTON ES BASURA." If that doesn't get through to them, I quit.
UPDATE, WEDNESDAY MORNING: They took the trash!! Hooray!!
I can relate. There's a huge trash bin just down the hall from my office at school. There's a sign taped to the front of the thing reading "This is not a trashcan."
What's that supposed to mean? Is it some kind of postmodern art exhibit? If it's not a trashcan, what is it?
Sigh.

Okay, we have had rotting pumpkins in the hall outside my classroom for a week with a note that says "basura" attached. Apparently, the devoted workers who empty and clean have another word for trash in whatever language they speak and/or read. In fact, at our school, the best way not to get something thrown away is to tape a note with "basura" on it. I'm wondering if "basura" really means "the most wonderful thing I have ever had and please take very good care of it"!

Ok, your Mom's comment cracked me up just as much as your post! :-)

I think those guys were just messing with you by taking the sign that said "trash" and not the trash itself. ;-) The rotting pumpkins are tougher to explain. :-(
